Bonus Objective: Give Back

From the very first flyer, $60 of this quest was never Malachi's to keep. That promise held all the way to the finish line: $60 is set aside for the Open Door Mission, the homeless shelter he chose himself, and he is excited to send it their way. Real heroes share their loot.

What Malachi took away, in his own words

The Switch 2 was the prize. This part is the actual reward — and it does not run out of battery.

Skill 01 — Work Ethic
“While working hard, you can earn something you want.”

He did not get the console handed to him, and he stopped expecting to. Somewhere between the first lawn and the last, wanting something turned into a plan for getting it.

— Player 1, Malachi
Skill 02 — Delayed Reward
“Hard work pays off in a good way.”

Three months is a long time when you are nine. He learned that the money adds up slowly and that the wait is what made the reward feel so good to open.

— Player 1, Malachi
Skill 03 — Favorite Quest
“I really enjoyed cleaning the church. Vacuuming the church was my favorite task.”

He uncovered some skills that he really enjoys.

— Player 1, Malachi
Skill 04 — Hardest Boss
“The task I found the most challenging was picking up the trash throughout the neighborhood to fill a whole trash bag.”

A full 13-gallon bag, 20 pounds of other people’s litter, in the summer heat — sponsored by Grandpa Troy. He finished it anyway. That is the whole lesson.

Quest Log: How It Started

Pixel-art yard work icon

Back in May, a nine-year-old announced an adventurous quest: earn a Nintendo Switch 2 with his own hands. A legendary merchant discount knocked the console-and-game bundle down to $450, which put the target at $510 once the charity pledge was added on top.

He did not just hit it — he outsmarted it. Late in the quest Malachi found a discounted refurbished Switch 2, which trimmed the cost, saved weeks of grinding, and still left the giving promise fully intact.

The quest was never really about the gaming gear. It was a masterclass in grinding for XP: saving, selling, giving, investing, and working hard for something you want.

🌟 Final tally: $510 earned across six missions, $60 set aside for the Open Door Mission, one Switch 2 in hand — and a kid who now knows he can do this.

A New Goal Is Coming

Here is the plot twist nobody saw coming: after cashing out, Malachi discovered that a one-time payout is not the same thing as cash flow. The console is bought. The income stopped. He noticed.

So he is figuring out what he is actually good at and turning it into something repeatable. Business ideas will be posted here soon — and in the meantime he is open to suggestions, offers, and odd jobs.

Malachi and his favorite (and only) sister set out on a neighborhood clean up around South Bellevue. They filled a full 13-gallon bag with cans, bottles, plastics, and metal — a solid 20 lbs of loot. Malachi later named this the single most challenging task of the entire quest.

The Church Clean-Up — Final Mission

Sponsored by Aunt Alyssa (Auntie Sasa)

The last objective was not about money at all. Aunt Alyssa sponsored Malachi to do a good deed in the community, so he helped clean a church — and vacuuming it became his favorite task of the whole summer. With this deed done, the quest was complete.
